A DAY IN TEMPLE: HOUSES,
HORTICULTURE, HISTORY |
A Preliminary Report
--
Sat., July 12 was the
day of Temple’s long-awaited house tour, A DAY IN TEMPLE: HOUSES,
HORTICULTURE, HISTORY. And it was a remarkable day, with more than 350
people from 37 area towns flocking to Temple to participate in the benefit
tour of nine houses.
The day’s success was
attributable in large part to the homeowners who graciously opened their
homes and gardens -- Bill Banks, Helen Davis, Gail Cromwell, Cheryl Hackos
& Andrew Milkey, Connie & John Kieley, Dan and Heather Pratt, Ann
Sargent, Martha Scott, and Priscilla Weston. The Historical Society can't
thank these generous and hospitable friends enough. Comments abounded
about what glorious treasures are hidden in the quiet town of Temple.
The other
not-so-secret weapon in the success story was the generous, apparently
inexhaustible outpouring of time and hard work by Society friends. Nearly
80 volunteers served as guides in the houses, set up tents, laid tables,
served lunch, cleaned up -- and generally pitched in on all fronts. It was
an outstanding display of true community spirit.
More than 60
men and women from all over southern New Hampshire made generous
financial contributions to the event.
We were blessed
with a perfect July day of sunshine, blue skies, cooling breezes
-- and no humidity and bugs. Overheard -- again and again . .
.
“
What beautiful houses, and what wonderful variety!”
“
What wonderful guides, so knowledgeable and efficient and friendly!”
“
What wonderful food!”
And indeed, Wonderful
was the name for the day; an unforgettable day of outstanding
community spirit and effort -- and enjoyment. |
